WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - It’s become a spring rite of passage for downtown Wausau. ‘Chip’s Popcorn Wagon’ celebrated its 27th opening day.

A fixture on the 400 Block, the popcorn wagon was greeted by temps in the mid-30′s and what’s left from the snowfall Monday morning.

“Over the years we’ve had snow. It also has been 70-degrees,” owner Chip Winter said. “I enjoy doing this very much.”

Winter says this is his semi-retirement job. But eventually he hopes it finds a new home, as it’s been on the market for a while.

“God’s given me a gift of gab, and so I enjoy visiting and talking with people. And my regular customers that come along. It’s very satisfying for me.”

But despite the weather that greeted his start to a new season, business was a little busier than normal compared to other opening day’s.

“Even the weather is a little iffy, I’ve had a pretty good day,” he said with a smile.

If you’re in the vicinity of the 400 Block, stop by and say hello to Chip. He’s always got something popping.

“It’s been good for me and good for downtown Wausau.”
