Stevens Point changes a street name to show support to sexual assault survivors
4th Ave. will be Teal St. in April
Stevens Point, Wis. (WSAW) - Fourth Avenue in Stevens Point is now Teal Street, at least for the month of April.
The name change is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, with teal being it’s official color.
Studies show 1-in-4 college women and 1-in-5 college men are victims of an assault.
The street name change is a way to show victims they are not alone.
“This is a reminder that we do care and we support the survivors and they have the support here in Stevens Point,” says Allie Waite, a UWSP Junior.
Other events at UWSP during Sexual Assault Awareness Month include a “What were you Wearing” exhibit. It features survivor stories.
A “Step into the Light Survivor” art exhibit is part of the month as well.
It’s all sponsored by the UW Stevens Point Center for Prevention.
