WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - A near-blizzard didn’t stop Blizzard fans from visiting Dairy Queen on opening day.

The Dairy Queen store at 145 E. Thomas St. in Wausau opened for the season on Monday.

The store is now owned by Madison Kostroski. She’s taking over the family business from her parents Tom and Sue Doering, who’ve owned it for 14 years. Kostroski said they planned their opening day a little later in the year to avoid any snowstorms.

“We opened purposely a little later this season even, just so this didn’t happen. But it is what it is. We can’t control it, we’ll just roll with it and use it to our advantage,” Kostroski said.

Kostroski has been working at the family-owned business ever since she could remember. She said she never imagined taking over the family business, but it’s something she said she’s passionate about.

“These past few years have been really crazy as is. So I thought what’s one more crazy thing. So I’m excited to take it over to add a little spunk to it, you know, kind of just re-vamp and re-strategize. So, I’m very excited.”

Her goal is to make the Dairy Queen more of a ‘local community’ by building partnerships, adding more seating outside, and speakers for music.

She said she’s excited about the resources the city has devoted to the Thomas Street improvements.

“It has totally helped that they kind of re-did Thomas Street and there are bike paths and all that fun stuff... we’re just kind of excited to get more of a local customer base and welcome new customers to our side of town.”

She also said they are working on bringing new flavors of Dilly Bars just in time for summer.

The shop’s hours are Monday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
