Several units badly damaged, residents displaced after large apartment complex fire in Merrill

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAW) - The Merrill Police and Fire Departments are investigating the cause of a fire in an apartment complex in Merrill. It happened at the Park City Apartments on the 700 block of Martin Street around 6 p.m. Tuesday. According to a press release from the Merrill Fire Department, upon arrival, heavy black smoke and fire were coming from the back of the building.

The Merrill Fire Department was first assisted by Tomahawk EMS and Pine River, Corning, Russell and Wausau Fire Departments. As crews continued to fight the fire, additional mutual aid was requested from Antigo, Maine and Hamburg Fire Departments.

Lincoln County Emergency Management, Salvation Army and The American Red Cross helped on the scene as well, according to the press release.

The American Red Cross is helping nine people who were displaced from their homes. The Red Cross said the victims are getting temporary housing at a local motel and other essentials like meals.

No one was hurt in the fire, and one pet was reunited with its owners.

Several apartment units were badly damaged from the fire, and 24 of the 32 units on the complex received minimal or no damage.

The Fire Department remained at the scene for nearly 3 hours.
