Novel blood test that can detect multiple cancers early is here
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - A first-of-kind multi-cancer early detection blood test called Galleri, which has the potential to transform cancer care by finding cancer in earlier, more treatable stages, is here in the U.S.
Unfortunately, cancer touches nearly everyone at some point and often is detected too late. Recommended screening tests save lives, but only cover five cancer types in the U.S. and screen for a single cancer at a time. In fact, cancers responsible for 71% of cancer deaths in the U.S. have no recommended early detection screening.
But now, there is a groundbreaking test that can detect more than 50 types of cancers even at early stages. The Galleri test is intended for those at an elevated risk of cancer, such as adults age 50 or older, and requires a prescription. It is intended to complement existing cancer screening tests, not replace them.
So, what is this newly available multi-cancer early detection blood test? Representing a revolution in cancer detection technology, Galleri is a blood test that screens for multiple cancers. In a clinical study, Galleri demonstrated the ability to detect more than 50 types of cancers — over 45 of which lack recommended screening tests today in the U.S. — with a low false positive rate of less than 1%. When a cancer signal is detected, Galleri can determine where in the body the cancer is located with high accuracy.
Cancer is expected to become the leading cause of death in the U.S. this year. With Galleri available for the first time, Megan Hall, GRAIL Senior Director of Medical Communications, joined Sunrise 7 to discuss this exciting new blood test that could transform early cancer detection.
