Your Town Marshfield: Weinbrenner Shoes; A company with a long history and bright future
MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAW) - In 1935, gas was 19-cents a gallon. Mutiny on the Bounty was the top-grossing movie and won Best Picture at the Oscars. Cheek to Cheek by Fred Astaire was the top song on the radio... And Weinbrenner Shoes was born in Marshfield.
Well, actually it took its real first step as a shoe company in 1892, moving to Marshfield in 1935. And how does a company last that long? The answer is simple.
“Nobody makes shoes better than we do,” said company President Jeff Burns.
He says yes, while there are other shoe companies, Weinbrenner is made up of what you could call “cobblers or shoe craftsmen”.
“A lot of companies now are designers, but we got actual people who know how to make a shoe,” said Burns.
There are more than 300 employees working at all the Weinbrenner plants. One-hundred-and-twenty-five of them punch in at the Marshfield plant. They make mostly work boots, but people don’t just wear them to work.
“They look really good with a pair of jeans, so we actually have a lot of people wearing these boots not only on the job but off the job afterward.”
The Thoroughgood brand is the hottest, up 53% in three years. But, as cool as it is to have fashionistas wear the footwear as a statement, it’s the people who wear the work boots for work that really keep this place putting one foot in front of the other.
“We build boots for people who build America. And that’s the law enforcement officials, that’s fire and that’s the construction workers.”
Speaking of construction, the company will be doing some of its own. With a plan to build a new facility or move into a different, existing building in Marshfield, sometime in the next 18-months.
