Assumption defeats Three Lakes 55-48 in D-5 title game thriller to win state championship
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WSAW) -The Assumption Royals defeated the Three Lakes Blue Jays 55-48 in the Division Five state championship game. The Royals win their third state title in the last decade.
“(I’m) So excited, and so happy that the team was able to come here,” said Assumption Ainara Sainz de Rozas. “Because right now with COVID and everything, we had to quarantine like three times, we never thought we were going to get here. Now you know, it’s going to take some time.”
The Royals led 33-25 at halftime, but Three Lakes charged back to tie the game midway through the second half. In the end, Assumption’s three-headed monster of Sainz de Rozas, Emily Bohn, and Jessie Grundhoffer was too much for the Blue Jays to overcome. Bohn led all scorers with 16 points.
“Like Ainara said, it’s not set in for me really yet,” said Assumption head coach Ryan Klein. “So once I get out of here, maybe I’ll go celebrate a little bit and it will settle in a little.“
After pulling off an all-time upset in the state semifinal game over Black Hawk, Three Lakes came close to pulling off the ultimate Cinderella story. Regardless, they leave La Crosse knowing they accomplished something special by bringing home their first Silver Ball in program history.
“They are an absolute family to me, they really are,” said Three Lakes head coach George Lurvey. “Like I think someone said to me after the Black Hawk game. You know these kids, obviously having a daughter the same age, I’ve been around them forever. Sleeping over at our house, and sleepovers.
“I’ve got so much time and so many years with them, that they truly are like my own kids.”
