PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) - Two Portage families are being helped by the American Red Cross after the home they were living in went up in flames Wednesday.

Firefighters and police officers arrived at the home on the 700 block of West Wisconsin Street around 9:40 a.m.

Detective Lieutenant Daniel Garrigan says all of the people living inside the home made it safely outside. An officer at the scene told NBC15 two families were living inside the home at the time of the fire. The homes in the surrounding area were also evacuated.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

All lanes of Highway 16 were closed nearly three hours at the W. Carroll St. intersection while crews battled the house fire.
