Marathon County playground renovations
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -
According to the Marathon County Parks and Recreation Department, Marathon County and the city of Wausau have committed to upgrading all the playgrounds in the area that are older than 15 years old.
These playground renovation projects are all possible to do the Community Development Block Grant that awards funds to lower-income areas that have the potential to thrive. The Parks Rec. Department said the full project is set to take 5-7 years to complete.
“It’s really exciting to get to upgrade our playgrounds and our parks, For so long on the city and the county side you have gone with deferred maintenance, cut budgets or this and that and the city and the county both have committed to replacing the playgrounds,” Jamie Polley the Director for the Marathon County Parks and Recreation Department said.
Oak Island, JoJo’s jungle, and Pleasantview are the first of many to get a makeover. The old playgrounds were torn down earlier this year. At this time the playgrounds are under construction. Each playground is set to bring something new to the community that was designed with a unique mindset.
“We wanted to do something unique for the community so hopefully the playgrounds now won’t be the same as the playgrounds you see at the parks,” Polley said.
The Parks and Recreation Department is asking that community members stay off of the new playground until they are complete. They also want to remind people to play at their own risk on playgrounds that are currently open.
Both JoJo’s Jungle and the Oak Island playground are set to open in early July.
