BAYFIELD, Wis. (AP) -- It's a sign of spring in one of Wisconsin's most scenic areas: The ice road between the city of Bayfield and Madeline Island on Lake Superior has closed for the season and the Coast Guard will begin icebreaking operations on Wednesday.
WDIO-TV reports the ice road closed Wednesday, with a van or windsled remaining in operation until the Coast Guard can clear enough ice to allow the ferry to start running again. The windsled makes five runs per day on weekdays and three runs per day on weekends.
The Coast Guard says it will break ice in the South Channel to Madeline Island and has asked anglers to remove their shacks from that area.
