A mild winter has canceled construction on a popular attraction for motorists, snowmobilers, visitors to Eagle River.
The Eagle River Ice Palace is usually built between Christmas and New Year's, however there hasn't been enough cold nights to thicken the ice on Silver Lake. According to a post on the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce's Facebook page, the ice needs to be 14'' thick, however since it is only 9'' the event has been canceled.
The “Ice Palace” has been a tradition, weather permitting, more than 80 years.
Volunteers harvest the ice from nearby Silver Lake, then haul the blocks downtown, where the castle is put together by volunteers.
The Ice Palace usually stands 20' tall along Highway 45 North.
