Farmers in 16 Northern Wisconsin Counties to Receive Disaster Aid

(PRESS RELEASE) MADISON—Farmers in 16 northern Wisconsin counties will be eligible for financial assistance to help them recover from harsh weather conditions last winter and spring, Gov. Scott Walker announced today.

At Gov. Walker’s request, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared agricultural disasters in Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Oneida and Vilas counties. Counties bordering the disaster areas are also included: Burnett, Langlade, Lincoln, Marinette, Oconto, Price, Sawyer and Washburn counties.

“I’m glad the federal government stepped in and acknowledged the natural disaster that occurred in northern Wisconsin,” said Governor Walker. “This action will help ensure we have stability and certainty in the agricultural sector of our economy, which is vital for future growth.”

The declaration stems from several periods of bad weather. In December and January, a freeze-thaw cycle caused frost heave that damaged root systems and left winter crops exposed to extreme cold with no protective snow cover. A cold, wet spring and a 10-inch snowfall in April worsened conditions.

The University of Wisconsin-Extension for Ashland and Bayfield counties reported that farmers lost more than 75 percent of their alfalfa crops on average, and many reseeded with grass or corn. All eight counties reported that, overall, they lost 50-80 percent of their alfalfa crops. Oneida, Florence, Forest and Vilas counties reported losing 50-80 percent of the clover and winter wheat crops as well.

Farmers in these areas may be eligible to receive low-interest emergency loans and SURE program assistance from the U.S. Farm Service Agency. They must apply for loans in the next eight months and for SURE payments in 2012. Assistance depends on production losses, available security, repayment ability, and crop insurance status. Farmers should contact their local FSA office for further information.

I saw in the article that they will receive the money from insurance and it was not an act of charity. In Europe is similar like in US if you get for example a Car Insurance Ireland, if something happens to your car or in farmer's case to the tractor or other vehicle you can apply for funds from the insurance company.

Good for you Julie growing your own food -- most of it. However -- have you ever noticed how most business owners drive around in nice vehicles and have machinery that costs more than your house? A farmer is a business owner and gets the same governmental help every other business owner gets. That's because they are business owners while the rest of us are just workers. So instead of complaining maybe you should become a business owner... Oh and I'm not a farmer either just an office employee with a garden. But I did work on a farm and Julie I bet they work harder than you do or ever will. Don't bite the hand that feeds you...

To Jen: Actually I do like to eat and I GROW all my fruits and vegetables for the whole year.... and I butcher my own meat... that I raise... but I do not get ANY help when we have a wet year or a dry year. We make do with what I have canned and frozen. So I wish I could have gotten aid these last few years when my garden did not produce because of the weather. I do not see the state giving aid to the local builders or contractors when their business is not doing well because the economy is bad and no one is remodeling or building. But NO the farmers get everything handed to them Have you noticed that the majority of them are driving new vehicles and have tractors that are worth more than my house. But no... this state allows the whining and crying farmers to have LOTS of free money. Well I don't know about you... but I work very hard to produce everything that my family needs to live, throughout the year.

Ah come on, I am growing citrus trees in my yard, the weather has been almost tropical for twenty years. We don't even have winter anymore. At least that is what the global warming nuts have been telling me.

Seriously?? Why do the farmers get all the help... they are sucking this country and state dry...STOP giving everything to the farmers. If they can't make it on their own then they shouldn't be farming. NO ONE told them they had to farm this was THEIR choice... so I say stop dishing out all of the money to them.

This state is agriculture! Wisconsin is home to approx. 78,000 farms where over 99% are family owned. We are talking about a few select counties receiving aid and there of course is paperwork that is involved; They don't just mail ever farm a check! WISCONSIN agriculture generates $59.16 billion in economic activity annually. I would ask that you have a little respect for our Wisconsin community.
