(Press Release) The warm weather and lack of snow are making this winter a memorable one. Many have yet to shovel or plow the driveway even once. The true warmth of spring is still a few months off but one sure sign of spring is here, the need for DNR burning permits.
Burning permits are required from January 1st until May 31st, unless the ground is completely snow covered. Burning permits are required in Waushara County outside of incorporated cities and villages. Burning hours are from 6:00 p.m. to 12 midnight, because this is when temperatures drop, winds usually calm down and the relative humidity rises. This is the safest time of day to burn. People who burn during the day are breaking the law and can be fined up to $175.30. Anyone allowing their fire to escape to become a wildfire is responsible for all of the suppression costs and liable for any damages their fire causes.
When you want to burn you will have to call the Burning Permit Hotline at 1-(888) 947-2876 or check the DNR website at dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire, click on “View Burning Permit Restrictions” after 11:00 am the day you want to burn. It is your responsibility to know where you are and the burning laws that apply at your location.
