It sure doesn't feel like January, especially with temperatures in the 40s and melting snow and ice. The warmer weather is creating concern about the thickness of the ice.
On Lake Wausau, we measured the ice to be about a foot thick. Now, keep in mind this doesn't represent the thickness of the ice on the entire lake or others in our area. People have shanties and vehicles outo n the ice.
I spoke to a couple of anglers about whether or not they're concerned at all about being out on the ice when temperatures are warmer, and they tell me yes and no.
"No, we're not. There's a good foot of ice," said Gerry Lahr, an angler from Wausau. Jeff Howard, another angler says, "I'm always concerned. I actually went through the ice two years ago up north."
He says luckily he had a boat cushion to keep him afloat until he was able to grab the ice and pull himself out. Lahr also said he nearly went through the ice about 10-15 years ago on the Eau Pleine Flowage. He was inside his truck when the back end went into the water.
Now, when both of them were asked if they had any items along with them, like ice picks or personal flotation devices, in case something happens. They said not really. Lahr has a strap just in case someone went through the ice. That way he'd be able to help pull them out.
A lieutenant with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department says you need to use caution out on area lakes and rivers. Ice conditions can very from body of water to body of water. You should always have personal flotation devices or even ice picks along in case something happens.
