MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Severe storms blowing through Wisconsin knocked down tents at the Jefferson County Fair, cut power to thousands of utility customers while blasting the state with gusts up to 70 mph.

The National Weather Service said the strong winds brought widespread reports of trees and power lines knocked down after the storms moved in during the afternoon Thursday and continued into the evening.

In Jefferson County, workers struggled to keep tents at the fairgrounds standing after some started collapsing in the high winds.

The severe weather knocked out power for more than 10,000 Alliant Energy customers. Utility spokesman Scott Reigstad says about 2,500 customers remained without power Friday morning, including 1,150 in southcentral Wisconsin.

About 1,400 We Energies customers lost service because of the storms. We Energies spokeswoman Irissol Arce says 1,200 were without power Friday morning.

In Dane County, police in McFarland said the storm knocked a tree onto a house, but nobody was injured.

According to the weather service, gusts were estimated at 70 mph or higher in Janesville just after 6 p.m. There were a number of reports of gusts topping 50 mph, including a 58 mph gust recorded at the weather service station in Sullivan.
