Historic Point Basse

Spring officially begins on March 21 and it must be so, because the annual Wakley Sugar Bush is the very next day. Our ancestors learned how to make maple syrup and maple sugar from the Native Americans living in what is now the northern U.S. and southern Canada. Each spring the trees were tapped and sap collected and evaporated to provide the tasty syrup used for sweeting foods for the rest of the year. The citizens of Point Basse will demonstrate this process over an open fire as in days gone by.
The whole Point Basse Historic Site will be open for this kick off of the 2014 season. Tour the Columbia School, the barn, blacksmith shop, trader’s cabin and the 3 bay shed, home of the ice house, carpenters shop and sawyer shop. Your tour will be complete with a visit the Robert Wakley home where you can sample homemade buckwheat pancakes.
Historic Point Basse is located on Wakley Rd. just off count road Z in the township of Saratoga just southeast of Nekoosa. The cost is $2.00 for adults $1.00 for students and preschoolers are free.
