Great Gardens: Maria's Garden

She has a spectacular country garden outside of Marshfield. And the green thumb behind it, Maria Edelstein carries the title master gardener, but she prefers the title, plantsman.

Maria says "that's somebody who just likes to grow things, just loves plants, a variety of plants."

Maria has lost track of just how many plants, shrubs and other growing things she has on her two acres of land. She and her husband moved there 17-years ago from a house in the city with a small yard and she got right to work.

Maria estimates she spends 3-to-4 hours a day in her garden.

She says her love of all things growing comes from her grandma. By the way, the peas Maria picked and gave to videographer Tom Z. and me would make grandma proud!

She credits her dog Dusty for keeping the deer out of the rural yard. He also never tires of chasing the frisbee. Two family cats also keep an eye the grounds, looking for chipmonks to chase away.

On the other hand, friends are never chased away and they never go away empty handed.

I love to share plants with my friends, they come over and they never leave without a a few plants.""

Maria's best tips for a Great Garden are start small, always have fun and be adventurous with it and never say "thank you" for a plant. She says it's bad luck and will stop the plant from growing
