Langlade County is getting ready to open all of its snowmobile trails for the first time this season, thanks to about a foot of fresh powder.

Before the winter season got underway, there was optimism for a great year on the trails. Unfortunately, those hopes were short-lived when mother nature didn't produce the kind of snow many were hoping for.

Now, the area has something to work with, and that's good news for local businesses.

"The snow will definitely help. How much impact it's gonna make we really don't know yet. If the snowmobile clubs get the trails open we expect a pretty big weekend," said Joe Yakey, general manager of Antigo Yamaha and Ski-Doo.

He says this season has been one of the worst in his 26 years in the business. The side of business that rents snowmobiles has been hurt particularly bad.

Because Antigo Yamaha is on the outskirts of town, riders can hop on a sled and take off right from the store. This year, people haven't been able to do so, until how.

Snowmobile clubs spent Wednesday grooming trails, but regardless of what kind of shape they're in, all 551 miles of trails in Langlade County will be open Thursday at 8 a.m.

Langlade County Recreation Coordinator Tammy Kubiacyzk says if you want to ride, it could be your last chance.

"I think the big thing is how long will it last because the temperatures, they're gonna rise," she said.

She recommends riders use caution on the trails.
