From 2002-2007 the Newman Cardinals totalled just eight wins. But over the last three seasons they've found success.
They made the playoffs for the first time in 2008. Then playing in the postseason again last year. But Tuesday the Cards made history yet again, scoring their first ever playoff win.
"The kids were so excited," said head coach Paul Michlig. "The bus ride home was actually kind of quiet. When you put everything you have into it, this is something these kids can take pride in 15 or 20 years down the road.
"It was amazing," said senior Adam Heis, "probably the best feeling I've had in my four years in this program, definitely the best. All of us talked about getting that first playoff win and that's what we did."
Now that they have their first playoff win out of the way, the Cards can turn their attention to making history again by getting their first playoff win at home.
"It's going to be very exciting. Hopefully we have a big crowd and everyone plays well, and does a good job," said senior Luke Prososki.
"It's amazing, we never thought we would have another home game again so to it's great to be able to come back here," Heis added.
The Cardinals have fourteen seniors from the team that made the postseason in '08. And that group hopes to end their careers the same way they began at Newman...by making history this Saturday against Rio.
