The state high school wrestling tournament is under way in Madison.

The 25th-ranked Marquette men's basketball team returns to action Saturday with a home game against Rutgers. On Sunday, 11th-ranked Wisconsin plays at Ohio State in another game that could have a big impact on the Big Ten standings.

It's the 35th running of the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski races in northern Wisconsin Saturday. The 51-kilometer Birkebeiner and the new 53-K Classic Birkie begin at 8:20 a.m. Saturday. The 23K Kortelopet Freestyle starts at 8:30.

For better or worse, the existing Milwaukee Bucks team will be the one that completes the season. The NBA trading deadline came and went Thursday without the Bucks making any trades.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost says he's looking for discipline at the plate from his two big hitters - Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. Yost says they're not going to get a lot of good pitches because pitchers are going to be very nervous when Fielder and Braun step into the box.

Jerel McNeal had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 25 Marquette to a 73-64 victory over St. John's Wednesday night. It was the Golden Eagles' third straight win after a two-game losing streak.

Trevon Hughes scored 18 points and Marcus Landry added 17 to help No. 11 Wisconsin beat Illinois 71-57 Wednesday night. With the win the Badgers move into a tie with Purdue atop the conference.

Michael Redd scored 27 points and Andrew Bogut continued his tear with 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks held on to beat the Detroit Pistons 103-98 Wednesday night.

The Green Bay Packers designated defensive tackle Corey Williams as their franchise player today, preventing Williams from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Green Bay also cut veteran tight end Bubba Franks.

It's an inhospitable trip for most visitors as Marquette's women head to Connecticut to play the top-ranked Huskies. The Golden Eagles are 14-11 overall and 6-6 in the Big East. Connecticut is 24-1 and 11-1 with its only loss to Rutgers, 73-71, on February 5.

Wisconsin's defense will again be put to the test against Illinois Wednesday even as the Illini have had a down year. The 11th-ranked Badgers lead the Big Ten in scoring defense at 55.4 points. But Illinois has scored 70 points or more in four straight home games.

Marquette returns to action Wednesday in New York City to face off against St. John's. The Golden Eagles are ranked 25th in the nation and will play in their second-straight national television broadcast after a 72-54 win against Pittsburgh at home on Friday night.

It's been a long, disappointing start to the season for the Milwaukee Bucks. But general manager Larry Harris says the good news is that the Bucks are still in a playoff race despite a 19-34 start.
