WHITEWATER, Wis. – In a battle between two of the top teams in NCAA Division III men's basketball, No. 6 UW-Stevens Point upset No. 2 UW-Whitewater Wednesday night, 72-61.
Four Pointers scored in double-figures as UWSP shot 50 percent from the floor.
UWSP built a seven point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half when Jordan Lutz (Amherst, WI/Amherst) hit a layup assisted by Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph).
A three-pointer by the Warhawks' Darnell Harris with six seconds left in the half cut the Pointer lead to 30-28 entering halftime.
After an early second-half basket by the Warhawks, the Pointers exploded for a 12-0 run that was capped off by a Lutz three-pointer to put UWSP on top 42-30.
The Pointers maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) and Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne) led all scorers with 18 points apiece. Lutz added 11 points and Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) scored 10.
UWSP held the Warhawks to just 40 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.
In all, UWW shot 5-for-22 from behind the arc and 8-for-19 from the line.
Two players scored in double figures for the Warhawks. Eric Bryson finished with 15 points and Darnell Harris added 10.
The Pointers return home Saturday, Dec. 15 to host Edgewood at 7p.m.
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team lost to conference rival UW-Whitewater Wednesday night, 58-55.
The Warhawks led by as many as 10 points in the first half and UWSP trailed 30-24 at the break, its largest halftime deficit of the season.
After the break, the Pointers chipped away to regain the lead at 32-30 as Taylor Bahr (Caledonia, WI/Shoreland Lutheran) rolled in a layup just over three minutes into the second half.
The Pointers built their lead to as high as eight before the Warhawks went on a 12-4 run to knot the game at 44 with just under eight minutes remaining.
The Warhawks never trailed again and led by as many as nine points.
Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) missed a half-court heave at the buzzer which would have sent the game into overtime.
Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) led all scorers with a season-high 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Barber chipped in 10 points with a game-high nine rebounds.
Courtney Kumerow led the way for the Warhawks with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Wednesday's loss marks the Pointers' first home loss since March 11, 2011, when they hosted George Fox in the NCAA tournament.
UWSP returns to action Saturday, Dec. 15, as it hosts the defending national champions, Illinois Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
