Pointers Win Season Opener

Three different Pointers scored their first goal in a Stevens Point uniform.

Garrett Ladd (Fenton, MI) got the scoring started for UWSP just under six minutes into the first period of his first game as a Pointer .

Point opened the flood gates with a three-goal second period.

Jon Bockman made it 2-0 Pointers with his first goal of the season at the 1:58 mark.

Drew Graves (Allen Park, MI) lit the lamp on the powerplay later in the period for the first goal of his collegiate career. Minutes later, fellow freshman Alex Kromm (Penticton, BC) found the back of the net for the first time in a Pointers uniform, giving UWSP a 4-0 lead heading to the final intermission.

Nick Kenney (Wixom, MI/Walled Lake Western) put the finishing touches on the victory with a shorthanded, breakaway goal in the closing minutes of the third period.

Goaltenders Nick Graves (Hewitt, WI/Ashwaubenon) and Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, MN/Champlin Park) combined to stop nine shots to record the shutout.

The Pointers out-shot the Foresters 25-9 in the contest. The penalty-kill unit was a perfect 7-7 on the night.

14 different Pointers recorded at least one point in the win.

UWSP head coach Chris Brooks was pleased with the effort his team put forth.

"I thought a lot of the goals we scored were goals in that critical area," Brooks said. "All the goals that we scored were from the hash marks to the crease. We have to get to that area, to pay the price, to be successful."

UWSP dives straight into Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play this weekend when the take on top-ranked St. Norbert College in a home-and-home series beginning Friday night in De Pere.

Brooks knows that his team will have to be ready to answer the bell come Friday.

"We have to be a lot better than we were tonight," Brooks said. "We've got some work to do over the next few days to get ready for a big weekend."

The Pointers welcome the Green Knights to Willett Arena on Saturday. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
