STEVENS POINT,WIS.-The UW-Stevens Point baseball team capped off its regular season with a sweep of UW-Oshkosh Wednesday afternoon at University Field.
The Pointers (32-8,19-5 WIAC) took game one by a count of 12-8 and the nightcap 11-3.
The opening game saw the Titans hang up three runs in the first inning.
But, Point quickly responded thanks to a grand slam off the bat of Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) making it 4-3 in favor of UWSP.
The Pointer bats went right back to work in the home half of the second, banging out three hits and pushing across three runs courtesy of a Riley Spetz (Sevastopol, WI/Sevastopol) RBI single and a pair of Titan errors, pushing UWSP's edge to 7-3.
Oshkosh pulled within one with three runs of its own in the top of the fourth.
Once again, the Pointers had an answer in their portion of the frame. Harry Steldt (West Bend, WI/West) and Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) each knocked in a run on a single and the lead was back to three.
Point tacked on one run in the seventh before the Titans came back with two of their own in the eighth.
The duo of Steldt and Rose were back at in again, providing some insurance the Pointers eighth. Steldt drove in his second run of the game with a double. Rose followed suit with a run-scoring single of his own.
Nash Bell (Oconomowoc, WI/Oconomowoc) picked up the win for the Pointers tossing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, walking one and striking out one.
Game two got off to a similar start as it was the Titans who drew first blood by taking a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
Just like in game one, the Pointers had an answer in the bottom if the inning. Spetz helped Point draw even when he pushed a run across on a groundout. Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) came around to score on a throwing error, making it 2-1 UWSP.
The Titans regained the lead in the third on a two-run home run by Tyler Kamps.
A three-run fifth inning helped the Pointers regain the lead, this time, for good. Coady blasted his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to right. Spetz later scored on a throwing error, making it 5-2 Point after five.
UWSP would go on to score in each of the remaining three innings.
Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) made the Pointer lead three when he singled in a run in the sixth.
Bobby Gregorich (Plover, WI/SPASH) launched a home run to right to tack on two more in the seventh.
Gerber put the icing on the cake as he knocked a two-run homer to left as part of a three-run eighth.
By the time the dust settled, the Pointers led by eight.
Starting pitcher Ben Messenger (Green Bay, WI/Bay Port) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on two hits, with a pair of walks and six strikeouts en route to picking up the victory.
Four relief pitchers helped secure the win by combining to throw four innings of no-hit ball.
Coady finished the day a combined 4-9 at the plate with six RBIs.
It is off to the WIAC Tournament in Whitewater, Wis. where the Pointers and Titans will lock horns, once again, in the opening round. UWSP secured the No. 2 seed, Oshkosh, the No. 3 seed in the 2013 tournament. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.
