UWSP Men and Women Both Winners vs. UW-Platteville

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) led the Pointers with 21 points as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team beat UW-Platteville 65-60 Wednesday night.

The Pointers (15-2, 8-0 WIAC) closed out the first half on an 11-5 run capped off by a Hass three pointer to take a 33-31 lead into the break.

The Pioneers (11-6, 4-4 WIAC) took a 45-40 lead with 12:30 remaining in the second half when Brad Reinke connected from behind the arc.

However, the Pointers reclaimed the lead at 49-47 when Hass hit a pair of free throws with just over seven minutes remaining.

UW-Platteville tied the game 53-53, but three pointers by Joe Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln) and Hass on consecutive possessions gave UWSP a six-point lead with 3:07 remaining, and the Pointers led for the rest of the game.

Hass shot 5-for-6 from behind the arc.

Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln/UW-Green Bay) scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for UWSP while Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne) added 11 points and a career-high nine assists.

Chas Cross led the Pioneers with 21 points and nine rebounds.

The Pointers travel to UW-River Falls Saturday, Jan. 19 for a 3 p.m. tipoff against the Falcons.

On the women's side, twelve different Pointers scored Wednesday evening to give the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team the 71-49 victory over UW-Platteville at Bo Ryan Court.

Alyssa Olp (Brillion, WI/Brillion) rolled in a layup just over two minutes into the game giving the Pointers a 4-2 lead and they never trailed again, leading by as many as 18 in the opening half.

UWSP continued its dominance in the second frame, building 30-point lead when Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) made a fastbreak layup midway through the half. The Pointers never let the Pioneers come within 18 points the entire second half.

Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) led the way for the Pointers with 12 points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) and Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst) each chipped in eight points in the win. Tyler also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

Kim Wellnitz posted a game-high 13 points for Platteville.

UWSP returns to action Saturday, Jan. 19 as it travels to River Falls to take on the Falcons in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. Tip-off set for 5 p.m.
