During Greenwood's stirring win over Bruce in the Sectional Finals, Cyrus Nigon had the game winning RBI double. That that was hardly his biggest challenge during his athletic career at Greenwood.
Says Nigon, "I went into 8th grade weighing 135 lbs., by the end of football I only weighed 115, so we knew something was wrong."
Eating constantly, and still shedding pounds, Nigon underwent tests seeking a diagnosis. A blood test revealed his blood sugar level was 500, five times that of a normal person, he had type one diabetes.
"It was hard at first counting my carbs and knowing how much insulin to take, it was definitely a challenge." Says Nigon.
For the last four years, he's kept his blood sugar levels at an acceptable rate through the use of an insulin pump and constant monitoring of his diet.
Adds Nigon, "Keeping track and paying attention to what I put into my body, playing sports, and weight lifting has definitely made me into a more physically fit person."
And his friends, well let's just say they're anything but sympathetic.
Westin Wuethrich lists nicknames given to Nigon in jest,"Diabeto, Cyrus the Virus, etc."
Laughing, Josh Harlander adds "He (Nigon) says 'you guys are a bunch of idiots'"
This week Nigon takes the field at Fox Cities Stadium. Win or lose, his career at Greenwood comes to an end. His battle with diabetes will not. As usual, he'll face the challenge head on, with a smile on his face.
