STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team made 15 three-pointers on its way to its fourth-straight win to start the season, an 88-66 non-conference victory over St. Olaf on Wednesday night at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) led the way for the Pointers (4-0) with 30 points, six rebounds and seven assists. The senior guard shot 10-for-18 from the field, including 5-for-7 from both behind the arc and from the free-throw line, and has scored 58 points in his last two games.
Trevor Hass (New London, WI/New London/Augustana (SD)) also made five threes and shot 8-for-13 from the floor on his way to 22 points and also grabbed six rebounds. As a team, UW-Stevens Point shot 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) from behind the arc. The 15 threes are tied for the fifth-most in a single game in UWSP history. Entering the game, UWSP was second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 63.6 percent.
The Pointers used a 15-2 run midway through the second half to turn a 10-point lead to a 23-point advantage. During the run, Hass drained three threes and Stephen Pelkofer (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) added one as well. UW-Stevens Point led by as many as 24 down the stretch.
UWSP led by just two at halftime after a tight first twenty minutes. The Pointers' biggest lead of the half was six points at 17-11 and 30-24. St. Olaf (2-2) led by as many as four in the closing two minutes of the opening half. Tillema hit three threes in the final 1:46 to send UW-Stevens Point into the break ahead 39-37.
The Pointers gradually stretched the lead early in the second half. A 6-0 run over a span of 2:12 to take a 60-49 lead at the 13:22 mark before the lead grew with the 15-2 run. UW-Stevens Point outscored St. Olaf 49-29 in the second half.
Clayton Heuer (Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln/UW-Green Bay) had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half and finished with a season-high 15 points and eight boards. Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne) also had a solid all-around game, as the junior recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes.
Connor Gunderson led the Oles with 17 points, including 16 in the first half. St. Olaf made all 12 of its free throws in the opening twenty minutes. The Oles bench outscored UWSP's 22-8 in the game.
UW-Stevens Point outrebounded St. Olaf 38-26 in the game and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the contest. The Pointers also handed out 21 assists, led by Tillema's seven and five from Ryf.
The Pointers host No. 5 UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, December 11 in a battle of top-5 teams. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse.
