STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the UW-Stevens Point baseball team a 7-6 lead over UW-Superior and the Pointers held on to win the second game of a doubleheader Sunday, 8-7.
UWSP (24-7, 12-4 WIAC) won the first game, 6-3.
UW-Superior (14-21, 7-13 WIAC) was the designated home team for both games.
On senior day, senior starting pitcher Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) allowed only two runs through 7.1 innings to earn the win for the Pointers.
Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) broke a scoreless tie when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning and later came around to score on a Superior error. Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead) added an RBI single in the inning to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
The Pointers added four more runs in the fifth inning. Gregorich led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) came through with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) followed with a single, and Gerber doubled to plate both Douglas and Schilter.
Coady drove Gerber home with a double of his own to increase the lead to 6-0.
The Pointers trailed 3-0 entering the fifth inning, but UWSP loaded the bases for Coady when Clint Rose (Watertown, WI/Watertown) walked, Douglas singled, Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) reached on an error.
Coady cleared the bases with a double to right-center field to even the score 3-3.
The Yellowjackets added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning to claim a 6-3 lead.
UWSP added two runs in the seventh inning when Coady was hit by a pitch with two outs, and later scored on a two-base throwing error. Later in the inning Nick Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring UWSP to within 6-5.
Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) led off the eighth inning with a single to set up Coady's two-run shot, his first of the season.
Brandon Kranz (Waukesha, WI/West) provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth inning.
Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) earned the win by pitching 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowing two runs (both unearned) while striking out six.
Coady went 7-for-8 with six RBIs, three doubles and a home run between the two wins.
The Pointers host St. Norbert on Tuesday, April 30 at 4 p.m.
