Normally, it's the biggest rivalry in town. But on the Granite Peak ski hill the Warriors and the Lumberjacks work together.

"It's a sport, Alpine Ski Racing, we have developed a sport with no river between us." Said East Head Coach Jeff Tobin.

"It's like we aren't even on separate teams, we're all one big team. We cheer for them when they cross the finish line and they cheer for us." Said West Junior Maya Desai.

"It's really cool that we get to practice together. You get to form some really good friendships on the hill even though you're going head to head with them on race day." Added East Senior Aaron Kelly.

The East and West ski teams are separate in the standings but in everything else they are a unit. From practicing to bus trips to even riding the ski lift together on race day.

"It's definitely a unique situation. We get to practice with them and get to know them but at the same time were competing. It's a friendly competition." Said West Junior Josh Zahl.

"I coach football at Wausau West so East is normally the arch enemy, but on the ski hill we're friends. It's a neat relationship and it's a cool thing to be able to work with the East Kids and have them call me coach." Joked West Ski Coach Bill Haling.

And even when the gloves come off these friendships don't melt.

"We hang out and stuff and tweet each other and talk about each other on Facebook." Said Desai

"Katie Spencer, my biggest competition this year, we're both in yearbook so we will see each other on the sideline and say hi and catch up." Said East sophomore Caroline Maahs.

This weekend is the State Alpine Skiing Championship and while they may be competing against each other the two schools will also be pulling for each other.
