MADISON, Wis. - UW-Stevens Point junior guard Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) and senior guard Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) have been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week for their respective sports.
Barber led the 12th-ranked women's basketball team to a 2-0 week as they defeated UW-Platteville 84-53 and UW-La Crosse 79-69. Against the Pioneers, Barber recorded a double-double, tallying 14 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist. In a matchup with the Eagles on Feb. 4, Barber scored a career-high 34 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. For the week, she shot 70.8 percent (17-24) from the field, 66.7 percent (4-6) from behind the arc and 90.9 (10-11) from the line. Barber averaged 24 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two victories. This is Sam's second WIAC Athlete of the Week award in as many weeks.
Tillema led the 13-th-ranked men's basketball team in two victories during the week. In a 70-54 win over UW-Platteville on Feb. 1, he scored 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds. In a 76-60 win over UW-La Crosse on Feb. 4, he recorded a double-double with 24 points, including 17 in the second half, to go along with a career-high 14 rebounds and three steals. Tillema also was 9-for-10 from the line. For the week, Tillema averaged 24.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and two assists. This is the third Player of the Week award for Dan this season.
Both the Pointer women's and men's teams take to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 8 to take on UW-Oshkosh. The women's team will host the Titans in their annual “Play 4 Kay” game in Berg Gym while the men's team travels to the Kolf Center in Oshkosh to take on the UWO. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. tip-offs.
