MADISON, Wis. -- Add a third to the list of major national awards keeping an eye on Wisconsin senior RB Montee Ball as the college football season hits its stretch run.
Ball was named one of 15 “Players to Watch” for the 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year award on Tuesday in an announcement by the Walter Camp Football Foundation (complete list).
The honor comes on the heels of Ball being named a semifinalist for both the Maxwell Award and Doak Walker Award. Ball was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back, last season.
Ball has rushed for 1,226 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and has averaged 154.6 yards per game in the Badgers’ five contests since Oct. 1. With 77 touchdowns in his career, he needs just one TD in his home finale against Ohio State on Saturday to match the NCAA career record of 78.
The 15-player watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award includes nine quarterbacks, three running backs, two defensive players and one wide receiver.
A list of five finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 28. The 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year, as voted on by the Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be presented Dec. 6 during the 5 p.m. edition of SportsCenter on ESPN.
