Seven players scored between seven and nine points for the Pointers (13-5, 6-3 WIAC), who held the Eagles (8-10, 2-7 WIAC) to 32.4 percent shooting in the win. UWSP shot 24-for-36 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the game, compared to 6-for-15 (40.0 percent) for UW-La Crosse.
UW-Stevens Point led 40-19 at halftime after shooting 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the first half and held UW-La Crosse to 21.9 percent and seven made field goals in the opening half. The Pointers also made four of six attempts from behind the arc in the first half, including a pair of makes by Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest), who was one of four UWSP players to finish with nine points.
The score was tied at six just over three minutes into the game before UW-Stevens Point went on an 18-0 run over a span of just over seven minutes. Anklam's two first-half threes both came during the run and six Pointers players scored in the stretch. The Eagles missed 10 straight shots before Rachel Atchison hit a three with 9:06 left before the break.
UWSP led by as many as 22 in the opening half and took a 21-point lead into the break. In the second half, the closest UW-La Crosse got was 14 points with 2:15 remaining. The Pointers shot 35.3 percent from the field in the second half but got to the free-throw line 28 times, making 18.
For the game, UW-Stevens Point held UW-La Crosse to 32.4 percent from the field and 18.8 percent (3-for-16) from three-point range. The Pointers also outrebounded the Eagles 45-37 in the game, led by eight rebounds from Kaitlyn Jacobs (New Franken, WI/Green Bay Preble). Five UWSP players had five or more rebounds in the game.
Jenna Pitt (Amherst, WI/Amherst), Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) and Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) joined Anklam with nine points in the game. Seven of Hennes' nine points came in the first five minutes of the game. Twelve UW-Stevens Point players scored in the game.
The Pointers travel to UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, January 29 for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Blugolds. UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-Eau Claire 85-45 at home on Dec. 4 behind a 50-12 advantage in points in the paint.
