MADISON, Wis. -- A pair of players that have contributed to record-setting offenses at Wisconsin over the past two seasons were named to the watch lists for major college football awards Tuesday.
Junior center Travis Frederick was named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, while junior tight end Jacob Pedersen was named a preseason candidate for the John Mackey Award.
Frederick started 13 games for the Badgers last season, including 11 at left guard and a pair at center, filling in for injured teammate Peter Konz. With Konz joining the Atlanta Falcons as a second-round NFL draft pick, Frederick will move to the center role for the Badgers full time in 2012.
The Sharon, Wis., native was a consensus second-team All-Big Ten pick last season after redshirting the 2010 campaign. Frederick became the first true freshman in school history to start a season-opener on the offensive line when he snapped as the Badgers' center against Northern Illinois in 2009.
He went on to start four games as a rookie and has 18 games under his belt heading into his third season on the field.
Frederick is among six Big Ten players among the 51 on the watch list, a total that ranks second only to the SEC's 10 candidates. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in college football.
The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be honored at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 12. The award is named for Dave Rimington, who was a consensus All-America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982.
Pedersen returns to consideration for the John Mackey Award for the second-consecutive season after being a semifinalist for the honor last year. The Mackey Award is presented annually to the nation's best tight end.
The Menominee, Mich., native was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by league media in 2011 after hauling in eight touchdown receptions and making 30 catches for a total of 356 receiving yards. In two seasons on the field, Pedersen has played in 27 career games.
He became the third UW player to reach the semifinalist cut for the Mackey Award in the last six seasons, joining 2010 finalist Lance Kendricks and 2007 finalist Travis Beckum, who was also a semifinalist in 2006.
A total of six Big Ten players are included on the 33-person preseason watch list, trailing only the seven candidates from SEC schools.
Wisconsin has placed a tight end on the Mackey Award preseason watch list in five of the past six seasons.
The Mackey Award will be presented on Dec. 6 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The announcement of the 2012 Mackey semifinalists is set for Nov. 12, with finalists named on Nov. 19.
