Attempted comeback falls short for Pointers football at UW-La Crosse

After trailing 28-7 at halftime, the Pointers (4-3, 2-2 WIAC) clawed their way to within seven with 2:06 to go. Starting deep in their own territory at 12, UWSP drove down and faced a fourth and four at the Eagles 17-yard line. On the final play of the game, Mitch Beau (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) hit Luke Neubauer (Shawano, WI/Shawano) on a slant but Neubauer was stopped at the two-yard line as the Eagles (2-5, 2-2 WIAC) held on for the win.

After the Pointers opened the scoring on a Brodie Johnson (Altoona, WI/Altoona) 35-yard blocked punt return early in the opening quarter, UW-La Crosse scored four unanswered touchdowns to take a 28-7 lead into halftime. Eagles quarterback Trent Cummings threw three touchdowns to three different receivers in the first half.
Â
UW-Stevens Point started the second half strong by marching down the field and scoring a touchdown to cut the deficit to 28-14. Beau's seven-yard touchdown run capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive in 5:35.
Â
The Pointers got within seven early in the fourth quarter on a four-play drive that lasted just 33 seconds. UWSP's defense forced a three-and-out and a short punt gave the offense the ball at the La Crosse 43-yard line. Beau then hit Sosinsky twice, once for 25 yards and then for an eight-yard touchdown.
Â
Jake Luedtke (Sussex, WI/Sussex-Hamilton)'s interception deep Pointers territory was part of a second-half defensive effort that saw UW-Stevens Point keep UW-La Crosse off the scoreboard. However, the Eagles defense did just enough to keep the Pointers at bay on the final drive to pick up their third straight win in the series.
Â
UWSP outgained UWL 440-260 for the game and the Pointers recorded 28 first downs compared to just 13 for the Eagles. However, the Eagles got three takeaways and committed the lone turnover themselves. Shane Rockweiler had a game-high 16 tackles for UW-La Crosse.
Â
For the game, Beau was 30-for-52 for 278 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Neubauer had eight catches for 81 yards, while Sosinsky made five grabs for 61 yards and a score. DeJuan Wright (St. Petersburg, FL/Keswick Christian), Adam Vesterfelt (Janesville, WI/Parker), and Beau combined for 160 yards on the ground.
Â
Outside of a 30-yard touchdown run by Jude Williams in the first quarter, the Pointers defense limited the Eagles to 47 rushing yards. Cody Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum) led UWSP with 12 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. Mitch Chester (Green Bay, WI/Southwest), Bo Seibel (Kewaskum, WI/Kewaskum), and Jay Kuenster (Sauk Prairie, WI/Sauk Prairie) logged sacks for UW-Stevens Point.
Â
The Pointers look to bounce back next Saturday at UW-Oshkosh at 1 pm.
