Athens Bluejays baseball advanced to sectionals last year and look to be a strong candidate to advance all the way to state this season.
But over the last few years, certain events nearly grounded Jays ace Gunnar Tessmer.
Take a look at an Athens Bluejays lineup and it's appropriate that a kid named Gunnar is the team's best pitcher.
But Tessmer's stellar career almost never happened at all.
A damaged retina that still lingers three years later and a second incident that left Tessmer with an emergency trip to the orthodontist, and a badly damaged psyche.
But Tessmer returned with a vengeance, sporting a plastic mask to protect his face.
He has flourished into one of Athens most valuable players, and is happy to laugh with the jokes that come with wearing the face-first safety mask.
But Tessmer lets his play do the talking, as Athens top gun leads his team into the postseason....with his battered face intact.
