Eau Claire, WI – July 10, 2012 – It’s been over a month since the Eau Claire Express had won a series. Tuesday night, the Express took the third game of the rubber match from the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The Rafters, now just 1-3 at Carson Park this season, came up just short in a comeback in a disastrous ninth for Eau Claire, falling 7-4.
Statistically, Kyle Wormington (JR, Valparaiso Univ.) put forth his worst outing of the season. The right-hander didn’t walk anyone early but was often working from behind (13 of 25 first pitch strikes) and was hit hard. In just 4.2 innings, Wormington allowed seven runs, five earned, allowing eight hits, including two homers.
With the score 1-0 Express in the third, Ty Forney blasted his fourth homer of the year to make it 2-0. In the fourth, the number nine batter Ryan Shober hit his second homer of the season, a three run long-ball, to make it 5-0 Express.
The Rafters got two of their own in the fifth. They were unearned though, as Devin Moore kept the Rafters’ bats quiet all night. They managed just six hits off the right-hander out of Illinois State who went seven strong innings, allowing two runs, both unearned. He didn’t walk a single Rafter and struck out five. After a run scored on an error, Sean Godfrey (SO, Ball St. Univ.) knocked in Aaron Gretz (FR, Ohio St. Univ.) to make it 5-2.
The best scoring chance for Wisconsin Rapids came in the ninth though. With a 7-2 deficit, the Rafters walked five times off of the combination of Matt Lynch and closer Tony Vocca. Two runs came in but Brandon Downes (FR, Univ. of Virginia) and Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois), for the second straight game were the final batters to face Vocca with the bases loaded. The Rafters’ ninth inning rally came up short against Vocca and the Express in game one of the doubleheader Monday when they lost 8-6, and Vocca would get Downes and Hohl once again to nail down his team’s 13th win, 7-4.
Wormington (1-3) took the loss, while Devin Moore (2-2) picked up the win in his third start.
The Rafters (3-3, 19-21 overall) return home to take on La Crosse (2-3, 28-12 overall) Wednesday and Thursday. Bo Henning (SO, Sacramento City College) takes the mound against his former team at Witter Field at 7:05 pm.
