For the 49th straight year, NewsChannel 7 is proud to present the 2010 Girls Basketball All-Stars, voted upon by the coaches of northcentral Wisconsin.
We'll go large schools first, and Antigo senior Lexie Geiger. She led the Great Northern Conference in scoring with more than 16 points per game, fifth in rebounding with seven and third in assists with three.
Medford's Jessica Holbach. The Great Northern Conference player of the year, the senior Raider was either 1st or 2nd in the conference in five major categories. On the season, she averaged 13 points, 7 rebounds, almost 2 blocks, 44% shooting, 70 % free throws leading the Raiders to their 1st regional title in 7 years.
Marshfield senior Andie Varsho. The senior Tiger averaged better than 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists per contest. A unanimous All-Valley conference 1st teamer that was the catalyst for the Tigers' undefeated conference title.
Joining Andie is her younger sister, Taylor Varsho. The super sophomore led the Valley in scoring at 18 per game. A unanimous All-Valley performer, she scored a career-high 34 in a sectional win over Superior, scored 20 or more 10 times and was in double digits 22 of 24 games for the Tigers.
And from Wausau West, senior Jessica Waldvogel. The Valley Conference player of the year, she averaged almost 18 points per game, she's the school's all-time leading scorer with more than 1,200 points. She also averaged 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, guiding the Warriors to their first ever trip to state.
To the small schools now, and Prentice junior Abbie Anderson. Tabbed the Marawood North player of the year, she had 14 double-doubles and averaged a double-double, 18 points, 10 rebounds and shot 51 percent from behind the 3-point line, leading the Buccaneers to a conference and regional title.
Senior Ashley Backes from Wittenberg-Birnamwood. A unanimous CWC-8 all-conference selection, she led the conference in scoring with 19, to go along with 2 assists and 3 steals and shot 83-percent from the free throw line for the conference and regional champion Chargers.
From Auburndale, Liz Breu. The junior Apache shot 59 percent from the field for an 11 point average, with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals. A unanimous choice for the Marawood South all-conference team and led the Apaches to their second straight regional title.
Next is Assumption's Hannah Osowski. At 10 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, the senior Royal was the floor general for a team that won 23 games and captured another regional championship.
Finally, Taylor Thomas from Newman. The junior Cardinal led a balanced scoring attack with more than 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 76 percent from the free throw line. The Marawood South player of the year, Thomas guided the Cardinals to conference, regional and sectional titles and the division 4 state championship.
