For the 49th straight year, NewsChannel 7 is proud to present the 2010 Boys Basketball All-Stars, voted upon by the coaches of northcentral Wisconsin...
We'll start with the small schools and the Marawood South Conference player of the year, Cody Hanke. Hanke led Marathon to a 26-1 season and a conference title. The junior averaged 18 points while shooting 64 percent, 8.6 rebounds and nearly 3 steals per game.
From Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Rick Parker. The senior Charger was huge in the middle, 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, shooting 60 percent. A unanimous all-conference selection in the CWC-8, he scored 42 points in a win over Gillett for the Chargers.
Daniel Petkau. The 6-6 junior led Rib Lake to a 14-10 campaign, averaged a double-double on the season, 16 points 10 rebounds...
he also shot 55 percent from the field.
Northern Lakes Conference player of the year Garrett Thorn. The senior from Three Lakes surpassed 1,000 points in his career, averaging better than 22 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in leading the Blue Jays to an undefeated conference crown.
And finally, Neillsville senior Cain Trunkel. Trunkel topped the 1,000 point plateau for his career this season, leading the Warriors to a 16-7 record. A 1st team all-Cloverbelt East performer, he averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists, registering12 double-doubles and 3 triple-doubles.
In the large schools category, we start with Merrill's Paul Jesperson. A 1st team All-Great Northern Conference player, Jesperson averaged 20 points, 8 boards, 4 assists. Just a junior, he's already passed the 1,000 point plateau, and is on pace to become the school's all-time leading scorer.
From Antigo, senior Jordan Mach. The Red Robin tabbed the Great Northern player of the year, 2nd in the state in scoring with more than 29 points per game. Mach led the Red Robins to their first state appearance in 15 years. He shot 55 percent, and averaged 5 steals per contest.
Next up is Wisconsin Valley player of the year Nate Piel. The senior Warrior led the Valley in scoring, 2nd in rebounding for the conference co-champs. He finished his career 10th on the schools all-time scoring list.
Medford senior Eric Platt. The senior Raider was consistent across the board. 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block,
he was a unanimous All-Great Northern Conferece selection.
Lastly,Cale Zuiker of Marshfield. The junior Tiger was voted all-conference in the Valley. Zuiker led the conference in 3-point accuracy, nearly 47 percent. On the season, had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 blocks per game for the Valley co-champs.
