MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Wisconsin running back in legal trouble has been reinstated to the team.
Sophomore Lance Smith was suspended last month for violating the university's student-athlete discipline policy after he was arrested in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.
Athletics Director Barry Alvarez lifted the suspension today just before the Badgers' first season practice.
He has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of battery and disorderly conduct.
Smith apologizes in a statement released today for his actions and says he will perform community service and take counseling.
He says his goal is to improve his behavior in the future.
