MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Sophomore running back Lance Smith is suspended from the University of Wisconsin football team.
That's the word today from Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, who says Smith violated the Department of Athletics student-athlete discipline policy.
The school hasn't released any further information about the alleged violation, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
But Madison Police Department spokesman Joel DeSpain has said that Smith got into a dispute with his girlfriend sometime after midnight Saturday over how much money she owed him for cab fare.
No charges had been filed in the case as of this afternoon.
The university says Smith had been suspended from competition and practice for the time being.
But it says he'll remain on official squad lists and can continue to receive support service in the sports medicine facility, the academic support center and the weight training room.
The 19-year-old Smith, a native of Warren, Ohio, was the Badgers' second-leading rusher last year with 345 yards on 95 carries.
He scored five touchdowns.
