MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin turkey hunters set a new record this spring, registering more than 50,000 birds.
The state Department of Natural Resources says hunters killed 51,306 turkeys, breaking the record of 47,477 set in 2004.
Wildlife officials attribute the record harvest to a growing turkey population, more permits and generally good weather, except for a snowstorm that struck during the opening days of the hunt's first season in April.
