2009 NewsChannel 7 Football All-Stars--Defense

This is the 49th edition of the NewsChannel 7 Football All-Stars.

Lets identify the defensive dozen, and we'll start up front on the defensive line with Nekoosa's Ben Tempas. The senior Papermaker had 82 tackles, 19 of those solo, 14 sacks and 10 tackles for a loss, leading the Papermakers to a 7-4 season.

Indy Spindler, a senior from Stratford. 90 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 blocked kicks and 3 forced fumbles. He's the Marawood Conference lineman of the year who always commands a double team.

Edgar junior Jeff Raymond. 134 tackles, 66 of those solo, 5.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. This was his first year with the Wildcats program, and made an immediate impact on a defense that recorded an astounding 11 shutouts.

Mike Peterson out of Marshfield. The senior Tiger finished his prep career with 59 tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss.

And senior Travis Buchholz from Colby. The big Hornet took the sting out of a lot of offenses with 95 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 7 sacks and deflected 4 passes.

On to the linebackers now...

DC Everest senior Konrad Zagzebski is a repeat all-star. The Wisconsin Badger-to-be registered 102 tackles, a sack, forced 4 fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal.

From Merrill, Sam Arneson. The junior was the cornerstone of the Blue Jays' defense and their deep playoff run. 84 tackles, 5 for a loss, 5 sacks, 2 interceptions, a forced fumble and recovery and a blocked kick.

Andy Borchardt, a senior out of Edgar. 141 tackles, including 19 in the state championship game, plus 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

Defensive backs now...

Edgar's Justin Sinz is a defensive all-star for a 2nd straight year. The senior Wildcat totaled 67 tackles, 34 of those solo, 3 INT's, a sack and 3 passes defensed.

Kody Wilson from Marshfield. The Tigers' senior was in on 82 tackles, 2 for a loss, 3 fumble recoveries to go along with an interception and 5 pass breakups.

And SPASH's Bryce Dominick. He led the Valley Conference with 5 interceptions. A safety that was all over the field, he also had 84 tackles, 9 for a loss, 3 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. And he'll only get better because he's just a junior.

Finally, our punter...

And that honor goes to Athens senior Brock Guralski. A key part of the Blue Jays' successful season that included the school's first ever playoff win. He punted 42 times, with a 33.17 average.

Congratulations to all 12 of these gentlemen, for being voted a NewsChannel 7 Defensive All-Star by our panel of coaches.

The offensive All-Stars will follow on Wednesday.
