Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the United States and it's making its way to Northcentral Wisconsin.

The Wausau Wolfpack, an East/West co-op team, is proof of the game's popularity, even to those new to the game.

"It's an interesting game," says Wausau East Junior Zack Trulan. "I'd seen it on TV a couple of times and I started thinking it's a cool sport, and more and more I thought about it and it grew on me."

His teammate Davis Runde said, "I always thought it was a cool sport so I bought a stick," says teammate Davis Runde. "Then once I found out the high school was setting up a team I wanted to join right away."

Players are equipped with a stick, otherwise known as a cross, with a basket, known as the head, at the end.

The basket is used to cradle and control the ball, and eventually score on net.

More simply, it's a mix of soccer and hockey, with rewards going to those who posses speed coordination and agility.

The Wolfpack are in their third year of existence and saw a record number of athletes come out for the team this year.

Bouyed by a state semi-final appearance last year, the future of the sport here in Wausau looks promising.

"I think once people come out and check out our games and see it on the field and in person, I think they'll really be impressed with how fast the game is and the excitement that it builds," said Head Coach Mark LaCrosse.

"The Midwest isn't really known for lacrosse," says Runde. "It's known for hockey and football. If we can get lacrosse to be one of the major sports in the area, that'd be a major accomplishment."
