PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Jarrod Washburn overcame early struggles to pitch four solid innings for the Seattle Mariners in a 4-2 exhibition victory over the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday in Peoria, Arizona.
Washburn gave up a leadoff single to Rickie Weeks, and J.J. Hardy followed with an RBI double.
But the left-hander found a groove and gave up just one more hit while striking out two.
He retired 12 of his final 13 batters.
Milwaukee's Ben Sheets was equally impressive.
The Brewers' ace posted his best outing of the spring, pitching five shutout innings.
He allowed two hits and struck out two.
The right-hander was limited to 17 starts last season because of recurring back problems.
His health might be the best news coming from Brewers camp.
