Turnbow, Brewers Bullpen Hope to Bounce Back This Season

PHOENIX (AP) -- Former Milwaukee Brewers closer Derrick Turnbow says he's already in midseason form.

But it's his form after that point last year that he'd rather forget.

Turnbow lost his closer job to Francisco Cordero, and lost touch with his mechanics and, as a result, lost the ability to throw strikes.

That all came after he began his career converting 51 of 55 save opportunities, and being named an All-Star.

He finished 2006 with a 4-9 record and blew eight saves for a 6.87 Earned Run Average.

Turnbow's best friend, fellow reliever Matt Wise, says he watched him workout during the offseason and is convinced Turnbow is past his struggles.

Wise had his own problems with an elbow injury that needed season-ending surgery.

But he is healthy this spring.

And Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin says the Brewers' bullpen could be one of the team's strengths.
