At the beginning of the season, the Wausau East swim team set a team goal of winning sectionals and placing among the top three at state this weekend.
The Lumberjacks have a legitimate shot at accomplishing that goal.
They had three relays and 12 individual events qualify for state.
"The guys have their own individual goals," says coach Brent Zinkel. "We came up with those at the beginning of the year, too. There are certain guys that feel they have a legitimate shot at taking an event - taking first place. Other guys, to score points for the team. It's not just individuals here. They want to do really well as a team and see what they can pull off because they have swam together so long, probably longer than almost any other team."
Two of those guys, Rob Schnitzler and David Hawker. are looking for good results this weekend.
"This is probably the year that East is going to be able to do some damage - not only as individuals, but as a team, and that's really exciting," says Schnitzler. "Everyone's worked really hard this year. We're just ready to go make it happen at state."
"We heard that we were going to place in the top three," says Hawker. "I haven't been able to concentrate in school or sleep very much this week."
A top three finish would be the highest in Lumberjacks' history.
