Marquette Drops Big East Opener

PROVIDENCE (AP) -- Herbert Hill had 23 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead Providence to a 74-to-59 victory over 15th-ranked Marquette in men's college basketball tonight in Providence. It was the Big East opener for both teams.

Geoff McDermott had eleven points, eleven assists and nine rebounds, and Weyinmi Efejuku added 18 points and ten boards for Providence, whose record now is 11-and-3.

Marquette now has a 13-and-3 record.

Wesley Matthews scored 14 points on 6-for-18 shooting for the Golden Eagles, who were without their Number Two scorer Jerel McNeal. He was injured when he banged heads with Matthews in practice on Monday. Dominic James added 12 points, making only three of eleven field goal tries.

Marquette shot just 31 percent for the game.

The Friars played without guard Sharaud Curry, the team leader in points and assists per game, who missed his third consecutive game for violating team rules.
