Wausau native Matt Schulz could taste victory as he took a lead into the final lap of Sunday's 49th World Championship Snowmobile Derby. No one told Tomahawk native Nick Van Strydonk. Van Strydonk passed Schulz on the final turn of the race to win and take the $20,000 top prize.
Schulz led the whole way, but had to settle for second. The rest of the top five included Justin Wahl, third, Ryan Kniskern, fourth, and four-time derby champion P.J. Wanderscheid, fifth.
