WAUSAU, WI – July 4th, 2009 – The Mallards posted 18 hits and pushed across seven runs as they completed the second sweep of the season over the Wisconsin Woodchucks with a 7-2 victory on Independence Day.
Four of the Madison’s first five batters singled as the Mallards picked up from where they left off last night and grabbed a 2-0 lead on a Harold Riggins two-run single to left center.
The Mallards continue to pile up the hits, but the ‘Chucks were able to wiggle out of several jams and keep things close as it remained 2-0 after five innings. The Mallards got a friendly bounce from the infield and scored another run to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jeremy Richter (UW-Stevens Point) blasted a two-out double off the center field wall and was followed by a home run by Troy Frazier (Kentucky) to deep left field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
That score would not last for long though as the Mallards registered four extra-base hits in the top of the seventh, including a home run by Joe Patterson, as they responded with a four run frame. Neither team was able to score after that, as the game finished as a 9-2 loss for the Woodchucks.
‘Chucks starter Kyle Gumieny (Southeast Missouri State) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work. Matt Jansen earned the win after giving up just one run in 5.2 innings.
The ‘Chucks offense centered around Frazier’s home run, though Chad Wright (Kentucky) and Mike Mutcheson (New Mexico JC) chipped in two hits in the loss.
The Mallards got a 4-for-5 day from Patterson, while Kurtis Muller, Jerrud Sabourin, and Harold Riggins each added three hits in the victory.
The ‘Chucks have an off day tomorrow before heading on the road for a pair of two game stints against St. Cloud and La Crosse respectively.
