The MLB trading deadline is 25 days from now on July 31st.
Personally, I'm a little conflicted on the Brewers trading for the Indians' C.C. Sabathia. He'll be a free agent at season's end and looking for a similar deal the Mets gave Johan Santana...7 years, 137-million.
I'd REALLY love the deal if the Brewers could work out a contract with Sabathia before the trade is final, but there's no way they pay that price. So not only will the Brewers be renting Sabathia for 2+ months, they'll likely lose Ben Sheets to free agency as well.
On the flip side, you get Sabathia, and he solidifies your rotation for a playoff run that could end in the World Sseries. Is sabathia worth the risk?
I say go for it, take a chance now!
Because next year, as it stands (an off-season trade not withstanding), Jeff Suppan would be the Brewers' ace with no Sabathia or Sheets.
May as well have both aces for the stretch run now and worry about next year when it comes.
