MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Eric Gagne (GAHN'-yay) is the Milwaukee Brewers' ex-closer for the moment.

Gagne lost the role today after he called yesterday's outing embarrassing and said he didn't feel he deserved to pitch the ninth anymore. The right-hander entered in the ninth inning of a tie game before allowing two runs and three hits in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 win.

Manager Ned Yost said he read Gagne's comments and will use a closer by committee approach while Gagne takes what Yost called a "mental break."

Gagne is 1-and-2 with a 6.89 ERA and just nine saves in 14 chances. He is tied with Cardinals reliever Jason Isringhausen (IHZ'-ring-how-zehn) for the major league lead with five blown saves.
